One MacBook, two monitors, one cable. Three curated builds, an honest rubric, and a configurator that does the math — so the only thing left is picking a color.

Kit's pick
The Sweet Spot. The 16" M5 Pro with 24GB is where the price-to-beef curve bends in your favor — enough RAM to run a small army of local agents, fast enough for anything short of training models, and a bigger screen for the rare moments you're not docked.
The only reason to go Full Send: if local LLMs are the whole point. 36GB of unified memory lets a 30B-class model live in RAM. That's the one workload the Sweet Spot can't fake.
The three builds
Same desk, three philosophies. Every price is the Apple/retail list price — street deals (Amazon routinely knocks $150–900 off MacBooks) only make these cheaper.
The rubric
Scored out of 10. The low scores are on purpose — a $4,399 laptop should have to earn its keep.
Build your own
Mix and match. The total updates live, and the workload checker below judges your laptop choice honestly.
Can it run it?
Pick the workloads you actually care about. Scored against your configured laptop — change the laptop above and this re-judges.
Fine print
RAM is the whole game for local AI. Unified memory is shared between CPU and GPU, so a 24GB Mac can hold a ~20B-parameter quantized model, 36GB holds ~30B, 48GB holds ~70B (tight). More agents = more RAM. The chip matters less than the memory.
5K at 27" is the Retina sweet spot. macOS renders 5K at a perfect 2x scale, so text looks printed. 4K at 27" runs at a fractional scale — slightly softer, and some people never notice. If text crispness is your religion, pay for 5K.
One cable is real. The CalDigit TS4 carries both monitors, power, ethernet, and peripherals over a single Thunderbolt cable. The 2026 Studio Display even upgraded to Thunderbolt 5. There is also a CalDigit TS5 Plus (Thunderbolt 5, 140W, 10GbE) if you want the newest thing — it costs more and you will not feel the difference.
Deals are constant. Amazon and Best Buy run $150–900 off M5 MacBook Pros on rotation, and the Studio Display has dipped to $1,484. If you're not in a hurry, set a price alert and let the discount come to you.
Skipping the dock is valid. A MacBook Pro can drive two monitors with two plain USB-C cables. The dock buys you one-cable convenience, ethernet, and ports — not performance.
Your iPhone stays the agent remote. Nothing here changes that. The laptop is the engine room; the phone is the steering wheel.
